Rio Ferdinand believes his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo was reduced to tears at the prospect of missing a return to Old Trafford after a controversial red card on his Champions League debut for Juventus.
Ronaldo was sent off after a clash with Valencia centre-back, Jeison Murillo just before the 30-minute mark after he appeared to slightly pull the Colombian’s hair.
The legendary Manchester United centre-back played alongside the Portuguese superstar in the Premier League and gave an insight into his frustration at being dismissed.
And he believes that Ronaldo’s desire to play football combined with potentially ‘I don’t know. I think it [the red card] is inconclusive really, it’s hard to see.

‘I’m sure that Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus will appeal that.
‘I think the emotion you can see coming out here, I think he’s going back to Old Trafford – he’ll miss that game – he wants to play football, you can see that.’
Fellow United legend Scholes suspects that Ronaldo may have problems appealing the inevitable ban.
‘It looks like he had a couple of nibbles at him,’ he added. ‘Looks like he had a kick at first, possibly swung an elbow.
‘It’s difficult. If that goes to appeal, I think he’ll struggle.’
When looking at closer footage of Ronaldo’s slight hair tug, Owen Hargreaves added: ‘You can’t do that.’
Ferdinand continued: ‘I think he’s got room to appeal, though.’
Despite the red card, Juventus still took a 2-0 lead courtesy of two penalties from Miralem Pjanic.
